If you want to live an intentional life, where you live out God’s purpose for your life, you need first to know His purpose for your life. The best place to start? Hearing from Jesus. You are supposed to hear from Jesus.

I went to a meeting of ministers where one minister said he was worried because there were so many people who said God spoke to them. It worries me when there’s a minister who doesn’t hear from God. That means there is a disconnect somewhere — which isn’t what God wants for us.

There are a few reasons for this disconnect. The main one I’ve seen is that people think they’ve strayed so far that Jesus won’t speak to them. If that were true, how would you get back to where He wants you to be? We’ve all done wrong, but Jesus is the only one who can show us and teach us how to get right.

We have been privileged of Jesus being a how-to God. He’s very practical, teaching parables on fishing and growing so that listeners in any period can understand and apply His teachings after hearing them. The key to applying His guidance in our lives? We need to hear from Him.

Before we can get into the how-to of hearing from God, there are three things to establish first.
● You are supposed to hear from Him.
● You are supposed to acknowledge that you’re supposed to hear from Him.
● You are supposed to believe that you’re supposed to hear from Him.

Think about how many times someone has been talking to you and you nod because you understand, not because you agree, or how many times someone has been calling you and you never heard them because you didn’t know you were supposed to listen. Jesus tells us in John 10: 1-10 that we are supposed to hear from Him, and to do that, we are supposed to listen to Him.

Conversations with God aren’t supposed to be a monologue.

Just spelling out our needs and complaints and challenges without expecting a response isn’t living in a relationship with Jesus. Jesus, the great shepherd, hears us and calls us by name, leading us to a life of abundance and profit — but only if we’re willing to listen, which will only happen when we understand and believe that we are supposed to hear from Him.
